Swim Lessons

We just got back from our first day of swim lessons. Will and Emily jumped right in and tested the waters for a few minutes. After some fun exercises of splashing and blowing bubbles, the "teaching" began.
Will took right to it. He dove down and got the rings. He kicked and paddled and had a blast. Emily... well Emily didn't. As soon as she lost the ability to stay near the wall, and a little bit of water got in her eyes, she was done. "MOMMY... I WAN' MY MOMMY!!"
We didn't punish the teachers by making her stay in, so she re-entered her comfort-zone right on my lap... wet.

As I watched my kids swim today, the pastor in me began to come out. I couldn't help but notice how much the reactions to the water paralell our decisions and commitments as believers in Christ.

We come to God without the ability to "swim"... All of us. We're helpless, and without Him we'd drown for sure. Some of us dip our toes in the water and say... "It's too cold. There's no way I'm getting in." Some of us (like my sweet sweet daughter) go in to test it out. As long as there is no real commitment, and we can just "play", we're fine. As soon as God says to submerge ourselves and trust Him... We're out. We rush back to our comfort-zone. Who knows if we'll ever get back in? Then there are the "Wills" in the pool. We trust and commit the tasks with obedience and joy... Before we know it, we're swimming...

Who are you?

We were made to "swim", and we were all given the tools to do it. Will you commit to do the tasks set before you, or will you turn away and hope you might have the courage the "next time"?

For the first time in my life I've been able to take my "floaties" off. God is always here watching... guiding and helping when I need it. My initial lessons are over... I'm just waiting for my Scuba certification.
